About "Tenda Wema"

Tenda Wema is a call to give so that all children may go to school and learn. The Swahili people have a proverb that says ‘Tenda wema, nenda zako’. This saying encapsulates the citizens responsibility to act justly (to do good) because it is the right thing to do. Any needy child or young person, without qualifying that they need to be ‘bright’ benefits. Tenda Wema is centred on the firm belief that citizens have agency and they must act with urgency. Hence, the project is sustained through volunteerism. It is spurred by the spirit of Ubuntu.

Background

Sara’s Cup is an annual tournament established in 2021 by Sara’s friends, colleagues, and staff with a vision of recognizing and appreciating her tireless efforts towards improving the learning outcomes of children furthest behind in the country. The cup has three main objectives:

  • Networking Sara’s community and key stakeholders in education for sustained collaboration.
  • Fundraising for Tenda Wema and
  • Recognition of Sara’s efforts in education

The networks include and are not limited to policymakers, research institutions, academia, government, and other partners. In the last two years, members of the cup have successfully organized two tournaments: The 1st edition was held in 2021, the 2nd edition was held in 2022, and the 3rd was held in 2023 at Nairobi Primary School. These tournaments attracted high-level participation from various stakeholders.
